Newspaper Stumbles Across Stash of Discarded Abortion Records

The Kansas City Star, one of The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette’s McClatchy sisters, received a call from a woman who said she found a stash of what appeared to be medical forms in a recycling bin in front of a local elementary school. Authorities told the woman they would not be responding, so she called the newspaper. A reporter was dispatched and shocked to find more than 1,000 private abortion records sitting in plain view, tossed on top of magazines and newspapers, possibly in violation of federal privacy laws.
