DOCTOR’S SON MISTAKENLY THREW OUT HUNDREDS OF MEDICAL RECORDS

13 July 2010

A doctor in Charlotte, North Carolina, has begun the process of notifying over 900 patients that their personal information may have been put at risk. Dr. Ervin Batchelor of Charlotte asked his two adult sons to dispose of medical records belonging to his office. His sons promptly took them to a local recycling center without shredding them. While Batchelor has acknowledged his mistake and pledged to have better data protection practices in the future, he could face fines of up to $5,000 per record.
